Softball Hopes to Extend Lake Forest's Successful 2010 Spring Semester

The Forester softball team is 22-12-1 overall and finished the regular season with a 12-1 record in Midwest Conference play. Lake Forest will host the four-team, double-elimination MWC Championship Tournament this Friday and Saturday (May 7-8).

Softball is not the only Forester sports to experience recent success. In fact, since the calendar turned to 2010, Lake Forest College teams have combined for a 88-39-5 overall record, good for a .686 winning percentage. They also posted a mark of 48-16-4 (.735) in conference play.

There have been several highlights, including...

  • Women's hockey's first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Championship.
  • The men's and women's basketball and hockey teams all reaching the semifinals of their respective conference tournaments in the same season for the first time in school history.
  • The handball teams defending their men's, women's, and combined team titles at the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships.
  • Freshmen Alex Marks and Becky Shaak earning Midwest Conference Swimmer of the Year honors and Vadim Tashlitsky being named MWC Men's and Women's Coach of the Year after leading both squads to runner-up finishes at the conference meet.
  • Women's hockey player Kim Herring being named NCHA Player of the Year and Carisa Zaban earning NCHA Coach of the Year honors.
  • All-American honors bestowed on swimmer Becky Shaak; women's hockey players Kim Herring and Courtney Bean; and handball players Nikolai Nahorniak, Aimee Ulbert, Suhn Lee, Maria Dugas, Victor Perez, Emily Zender, Pat Jarvis, and Sarah Brusig.
  • Men's tennis winning a program record 20 matches against just six losses and finishing second at the MWC Championships.
  • Softball placing first in the MWC South Division standings for the fifth year in a row and earning the right to host the 2010 MWC Championship Tournament.
  • More than 50 school records being broken or tied.

Lake Forest is hoping to extend the 2010 spring semester and add another entry or two to the list above by capturing the MWC softball championship on Saturday. The winner receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which will begin next Thursday (May 13).
