The Lake Forest College softball team closed out the Midwest
Conference portion of its schedule with a doubleheader sweep of
visiting Grinnell College on Sunday (April 25). The home team won
the opener 8-0 in six innings and game two 18-1 in five frames. The
Foresters are now 22-10-1 overall and 12-1 in league play this
season. The Pioneers fell to 5-25 overall and 3-9 in the
conference.
After tossing the first perfect game in team history the day
before, feshman pitcher Jordan Ratliff (Petersburg,
Mich./Summerfield) threw her third shutout of the season in
Sunday's opener. She allowed five base hits and struck out five
batters without walking any in the contest. Ratliff is now 11-4
with a 1.42 earned run average this year.
Lake Forest's first three batters of the game came around to score.
Freshman second baseman Megan Harkins (Homewood,
Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) led off the bottom of the first inning
with a bunt single and immediately stole her team-high 17th base of
the season. Sophomore right fielder Danielle Gore (Arlington
Heights, Ill./Hersey) drove her in with a triple down the right
field line and senior shortstop Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake
Park) followed with her fourth home run of the season.
After four scoreless frames, the Foresters closed out the game with
five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior third baseman
Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led off with a base hit
and freshman designated player Nikki Miller (Starkville,
Miss./Starkville Academy) followed with a single of her own. Senior
left fielder Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove
South) then tripled down the right field line and scored on a base
hit by senior first baseman Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach,
Mich./Lenawee Christian). After a pair of walks and the first out
of the inning, Gore singled down the right field line to score the
game-ending runs.
Gore was 3-for-3 and Norton and Andresen each had two of the
Foresters' 12 base hits in the contest.
Sophomore pitcher Cami Daun (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North)
started game two for the second day in a row. She allowed a run in
the top of the first inning but held the Pioneers scoreless the
rest of the way, scattering nine hits and a walk, to raise her
record on the year to 2-0.
Grinnell's lead did not last long as the Foresters scored four runs
in the bottom of the first inning. Miller singled with one out and
Daun ran for her. Rainey then singled Daun to third and stole
second. Daun then scored and Rainey went to third when a pick-off
attempt got away from the third baseman. Norton singled in Rainey
and a two-out double to the left field corner by freshman Aubrey Pendegraft (Creston, Iowa/Creston) plated another run. Neill
singled up the middle to drive in Pendegraft with the final run of
the inning.
A six-run second inning extended the home team's lead to 10-0. A
pair of errors and a sacrifice bunt by Daun put runners on second
and third with one out. Rainey followed with an RBI-single and a
second run scored on a wild pitch. Norton doubled in Rainey and
scored on a base hit by Pendegraft. Neill singled up the middle and
scored behind Pendegraft on a triple by sophomore outfielder Leslie Harshey (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein).
Gore led off the third inning with an infield single and later
scored on a groundout by Rainey. Freshman outfielder Mary Glowacz
(Chicago, Ill./William H. Taft) also singled and two batters
reached on errors in the frame. Pendegraft made the score 15-0 with
her second three-run homer in as many days.
Gore and Rainey doubled, Norton tripled, and Glowacz singled in one
of the team's three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Norton was a home run shy of the cycle and Pendegraft was missing
the triple in game two. Rainey also had three of the team's 17 hits
and, along with Norton, Pendegraft, and Gore, scored three times.
Pendegraft drove in five runs while Rainey and Norton added three
RBI apiece.
