Foresters Fall at Grinnell in Another High-Scoring Affair

Foresters Fall at Grinnell in Another High-Scoring Affair

The Lake Forest College football team was defeated 49-34 at Grinnell College on Saturday in a game that included more than 850 yards of offense. Forester senior wide receiver Kevin Davis caught 14 passes, the second-highest single-game total in team history.

The only Forester with more than 14 reception in a game is Dan Cole, who hauled in 17 passed against Monmouth College in 1990. Davis scored on one of his receptions on Saturday and finished the contest with a career-high 157 receiving yards.

Lake Forest junior quarterback Pete Scaffidi passed for more than 300 yards for the second straight week. He completed 31 passes for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns with one interception. Classmate Austin Sobey caught five of those passes for 94 yards and his sixth touchdown reception of the season.

Forester junior tailback Al Mitchell carried the ball 22 times for a game-high 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Lake Forest defense was led by senior safety Luke Butts' nine tackles.

The visitors took the early lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Scaffidi to Davis less than two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Three touchdown passes and a two-point conversion by the Pioneers gave them a 22-7 lead, which was trimmed to 22-14 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Mitchell on the final play of the first half.

Both teams scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter with the Foresters reaching the end zone on a 35-yard pass from Scaffidi to Sobey and a 3-yard run by Mitchell. Grinnell eventually extended its lead to 49-26 before a 1-yard run by Scaffidi accounted for the final score.

The Foresters will host Carroll University for Homecoming next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
