Forester women's tennis sophomore Maria Jose Campos was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for her performance in the Midwest Conference Team and Individual Tournaments over the weekend.
In the Midwest Conference Team Tournament quarterfinals against Lawrence University on Friday, Campos won her doubles match with partner freshman Sara Lopez 8-6 at the #1 spot. She was leading in her #1 singles position 6-1, 3-1 at the time of team clinch. Then, in the finals she was the Foresters' only victory, defeating Grinnell's #1 singles player 6-3, 6-4.
Then, Lake Forest competed at the Midwest Conference Individual Tournment on Saturday and Sunday. At #1, Campos and Lopez rolled 8-0 in the quarterfinals but were edged out 8-7 (7-5) in the semifinals during the doubles tournament.
Then on Sunday, Campos earned the Forester's only victory in the finals of the singles tournament. She did not drop a game in her quarterfinal victory at the top of the lineup, and she took both sets 6-3 in the semifinals. After dropping the first set 6-0 in the final, she forced a tiebreaker in set two before falling 7-6 (7-5).
The Forester Athletes of the Week are voted for by the athletic department on Tuesdays.
