Lake Forest College men's hockey player Nick Wiencek was named Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week on Saturday for his performance in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Saint Mary's University.
Wiencek, a junior, stopped all 16 of the Cardinals' shots on goal in the opening period and added a dozen saves in both the second and third. The Foresters finally broke through with a goal midway through the second period and added two more in the game's final 62 seconds. It was the first victory for Wiencek, a junior who was making just his third career start.
The last Lake Forest goaltender with at least 40 saves in a shutout was Brandon Kohuch, who tallied 53 in a scoreless tie on February 7, 2009.
NCHA Players of the Week are selected by the league office.
