The Forester men's hockey team traveled east over the holiday weekend and began a series at Manhattanville College with a 6-5 loss Friday night.
Five different players score for Lake Forest, beginning with junior forward David Cohen at the 9:04 mark of the second period. His power play goal was assisted by junior forward Josh Norman and tied the score at one.
The home team regained the lead 89 seconds later and scored short-handed at 16:11 to pull ahead 3-1.
The Foresters then rattled three straight goals in less than a minute late in the period. Senior forward Will Lebel's unassisted score at 17:25 pulled the visitors to within one and freshman forward Noah Furman tied the game 43 seconds later. Furman's goal came just 15 seconds into a power play and was set up by freshman defenseman Matteas Derraugh. Freshman forward Jared Gerger gave the Foresters their first lead of the game just 10 seconds later with senior forward Josh Giacomin assisting and Lake Forest led 4-3 going into the final period.
The Valiants put together a three-goal run of their own in the third, beginning with a power play score just 18 seconds into the period. They took the lead on another power play tally at 5:03 and tacked on what proved to be an important insurance goal at 8:28.
Lake Forest sophomore forward Tyler Nielsen scored off a pass from junior defenseman with exactly a minute to play but the Foresters put three more shots on goal in the final minute but were unable to come back again.
The Foresters had a 42-24 advantage in shots on the night.
The loss dropped Lake Forest's record on the season to 3-4-1 while Manhattanville improved to 5-3-1. The teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 3:00 (ET).
