The Forester men's golf team placed seventh at the three-day Midwest Conference Tournament, which concluded on Saturday. Senior Luke Swardenski shot a 78 on Saturday for Lake Forest's best individual round of the tournament.
Swardenski and freshman Durham Ghelfi tied for team-best honors and 21st place overall with a three-day score of 252. Swardenski posted rounds of 87 on Thursday and Friday while Ghelfi followed his opening round of 80 with an 84 on Friday and an 88 on Saturday.
Freshman Davis DeKorte finished just one shot behind Swardenski and Ghelfi and in a tie for 26th in the field. After posting a 90 on Thursday, he carded an 82 on Friday and was one shot better on Saturday. Classmate Jeremy Edelson tied for 33rd overall at 262 while senior David Grannis and freshman Christopher Rockers finished two strokes behind Edelson.
St. Norbert College claimed the 2015 MWC championship with a three-day team score of 934, nine shots better than runner-up Carroll University. Monmouth College was third at 952 and Grinnell College fourth at 976. Lake Forest gained six strokes on fifth-place Lawrence University (990) and 10 on sinxth-place Illinois College (1,002) on Saturday but still finished two shots away from the Blueboys in seventh place. Knox College and Ripon College did not field complete teams.
It was the first MWC Championship Tournament in Forester men's golf history. The program was reinstated as a varsity sport at the College this year. The last time Lake Forest competed was in 1970 and the team's last conference championships in any league was the 1963 College Conference of Illinois Tournament, where the team placed second.
Swardenski and Grannis are the only two members of the team that will be lost to graduation next weekend.
