Three-Point Shooting Leads Foresters to Victory over Chicago

Three-Point Shooting Leads Foresters to Victory over Chicago

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team won its 2010-11 home opener 76-58 over the University of Chicago Tuesday night. Junior guard Chris Roets knocked down six of the Foresters' 15 three-pointers in the game.

Roets shot 6-for-7 from beyond the arc, the second-best three-point shooting performance, in terms of accuracy, in team history. Joe Wysocki was 6-for-6 in a game during the 1997-98 season and a Forester has made five of six attempts in a contest five times. He is just the seventh player in team history to make as many as six in a contest. The record is seven. Roets' career-high 18 points led all players in the game and he added three rebounds, two assists and two steals on the night.

Junior forward Nate Bateman was next on the team with 15 points. He shot 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from long range. Bateman also pulled down four rebounds and had two steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore guard Jeff Beck scored 14 points, pulled down six rebounds, and dished out a game-high five assists. He also made two of three shots from three-point range. Junior guard David Pilalis also reached double figures with 11 points and shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Lake Forest's leading scorer for the last two seasons, junior post player Travis Clark, scored just four points but pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and added three assists and a pair of steals.

The Foresters finished 15-for-25 from three-point range and made half of their 48 field goal attempts overall. Chicago shot just 37.3 percent from the field and 4-for-14 on three-pointers. Lake Forest also had a 35-28 edge in rebounds but committed 15 turnovers to the Maroons' nine.

Roets scored the game's first two baskets - both three-pointers - and Bateman knocked down a couple of free throws to give the Foresters an early 8-0 lead. Lake Forest also scored the final eight points of the opening period and led 43-26 at halftime.

The margin reached as many as 28 points (64-36) in the second half.

Lake Forest's 15 three-pointers match the second-highest single-game total in program history. The Foresters made 16 of 33 from beyond the arc against Knox College on January 5, 2002 and knocked down 15 of 32 against Knox five weeks later.

The Foresters are now 1-1 on the season while Chicago falls to 1-3. Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference play at Beloit College Sunday at 3:00 p.m. A live video webcast of the game will be available at www.pennatlantic.com.
