The Forester women's tennis team was defeated 7-2 by Gettysburg College in Hilton Head, South Carolina on Thursday. Lake Forest senior Melika Celebic won both of her matches on the day to set one team record and tie another.
Celebic defeated the Bullets' top player 6-1, 6-1 for her 45th career victory at #1 singles, which broke a tie with Alli Berry (2004-07) for first place in program history. It was her 48th career singles victory overall, matching Jamie Irons (1998-2001) for second place in team annals, trailing only Jackie Pieczkiewicz's 50 wins from 1999 through 2002.
Freshman Christi Valicenti teamed up with Celebic on an 8-2 triumph at #1 doubles. It raised their school record victory total on the season to 19 and increased Celebic's mark for #1 doubles wins in a career to 44. It was also Celebic's 95th career victory overall (singles and doubles), tying Brittany Richardson's program record set in 2005.
The loss dropped the Foresters to 12-7 on the year. Gettysburg is now 4-1.
After returning to Lake Forest from the first Spring Break trip in team history, the Foresters will have a few weeks off before playing at Carthage College at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3.
