The Forester women's basketball team was defeated 65-61 at
Illinois College Wednesday night (January 27). Lake Forest fell to
to 12-4 overall this season and suffered its first Midwest
Conference loss after winning its first eight league games of the
year. The Lady Blues raised their overall record to 10-6 and MWC
mark to 5-4.
Forester senior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen
Park) led the squad in scoring for the eighth consecutive contest.
She finished the game with 17 points, a team-high seven rebounds,
three assists, and two steals. Nassin is now just 19 points shy of
1,000 for her career.
Senior guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was next on the
team with 16 points. She shot 5-for-7 from the field, made two of
three attempts from three-point range, and connected on four of
five free throw. Grunauer also recorded a game-high four steals.
Junior guard Emily Weber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School) also
reached double figures with 10 points and freshman guard Sam Schuring (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove) dished out a team-high four
assists.
Both teams shot 40 percent from the field. Illinois College's main
advantage came at the free throw line, where the Lady Blues shot
23-for-30 while the Foresters were just 10-for-13. Lake Forest was
out-rebounded 33-31 and both teams committed 17 turnovers.
The Foresters led most of the first half and by as many as eight
points. The home team closed out the period on an 8-2 run to trim
the Lake Forest lead to 31-29 at halftime.
The Lady Blues tied the game seven times in the second half before
finally taking their first lead of the period on a layup with 67
seconds remaining. A layup by Nassin with 41 seconds to play gave
the Foresters a 61-60 lead but the home team scored on another
layup with 28 second left. Lake Forest was unable to score again
and Illinois College players made three of six free throws to close
out the victory.
