Foresters NCAA Tourney Run Finally Comes to an End

Foresters NCAA Tourney Run Finally Comes to an End

After storybook finishes in last week's NCAA Division III Regional Tournament, the Lake Forest College softball team was unable to come back again against visiting Alma College in the Super Regional this weekend. Alma took game two 7-1 on Saturday to sweep the best-of-three series and advance to the NCAA Division III Finals.

Lake Forest jumped out to the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior leftfielder Audrey Djukic led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield and senoir rightfielder Kayla Borgra hit the ball in the same spot to put runners on first and second. Three batters later, junior third baseman Kaleigh Ambrose lined a single to center to drive in Djukic with the game's first run.

Alma, however, scored twice in the top of the second and gradually added to the lead throughout the game. The Scots added a run in the third inning, three in the fourth, and one more in the fifth.

Trailing 7-1, the Foresters threatened again in the bottom of the sixth inning but had a baserunner thrown out at the plate and stranded two more in scoring position.

Lake Forest junior second baseman Vasi Panos was 3-for-3 with a double in the contest while Borgra and Ambrose added two hits apiece.

The Foresters finished the year with a program record 35 victories against just 11 losses for the highest winning percentage in team history (.761). They also set new single-season school records with 416 hits, 289 runs, 258 runs batted in, 645 total bases, 74 doubles, 161 walks drawn, five saves, and 308 strikeouts.

In addition to Borgra and Djukic, the team also loses seniors Whitney Leiderman and Raquel Ness to graduation.
