Lake Forest College softball player Jessi Werner was named Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week for her performance during the team's Spring Break trip to Florida last week.
The Foresters went 9-1 on the week and Werner, a junior pitcher, appeared in eight games. She went the distance and earned the win in each five of her starts, including a shutout of Gordon College on Tuesday and another of Trinity College (Connecticut) on Saturday. Werner also struck out at least six batters in each start with a high of 11 against Gordon and Marywood University. Her seventh strikeout against Marywood on Friday was also the 264th of her career, one more than the previous program record set by Nancy Findeisen in 2003.
In addition to her exploits as a starter, Werner did not allow a baserunner in three relief appearances covering 5.1 innings. She retired the last two batters of a 2-0 triumph over Millikin University on Thursday for her first career save.
Werner posted a 1.10 earned run average on the week while striking out 49 batters in 38.1 innings of work. Opponents managed only 18 base hits and batted just .142 against her.
MWC Performers of the Week are selected by the league's director of media and information.
