The Forester softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Alma College in the opener of a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional Series on Friday. Game two will begin Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
Alma took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating a pair of runs in the frame. The Scots added an insurance run in the sixth.
Lake Forest had just four base hits in the game, including singles by senior rightfielder Kayla Borgra and junior first baseman Sally Snarski in the top of the first inning. Junior catcher Alex Hemmer added a base hit over the shortstop in the top of the third and junior second baseman Vasi Panos lined a single through the right side of the infield to lead off the seventh.
Borgra was hit by a pitch for the team record 15th time in her career in the fifth inning. It broke a tie with Forester Athletic Hall of Famer Robyn Slater, who was plunked 14 times from 2000-03.
It was just the fourth loss of the year for Lake Forest junior pitcher Jessi Werner, who surrendered a pair of runs in four innings of work. Sophomore Jenny McTague allowed one run in two innings of relief. They each struck out two batters and have now combined for exactly 300 punchouts on the season, easily surpassing the program record of 238 they helped set a season ago.
The Foresters' record on the year fell to 35-10 while Alma improved to 29-15.
The same two teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 1:00. A Lake Forest victory would force a decisive game three, which would begin at approximately 3:30.
