Deb Boe '85 was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for her performance in three consecutive victories during the 1984 season.
While accurate match-by-match statistics during that era are scarce, Boe, a senior setter and team captain, was noted in The Stentor for her "fine setting" during Lake Forest's 15-8, 15-6, 15-13 triumph at St. Xavier University on Wednesday, September 26.
That Saturday was Homecoming and the Foresters hosted a pair of matches, including their Midwest Athletic Conference for Women opener against Ripon College. The experience of the Lake Forest seniors proved to be the difference in the first game, a 16-14 victory during which the teams were never separated by more than two points. Ripon took the second game 15-12 but the Foresters responded with a 15-8 triumph in the third. Trailing 9-0 in game four, the home team came back to prevail 15-13 and take the match. Boe started serving with the Foresters trailing 10-4 and finally finished 10 points later.
Lake Forest rolled 15-4, 15-6 in a best-of-three match against Knox College after the victory over Ripon. The Stentor highlighted Boe's hitting percentage in the opening set and several players were recognized for their offensive prowess in the second, a credit to the team's setter.
The Foresters went on to post a 24-11 overall record and 4-1 mark in MACW North Division play in 1984. They swept the other five teams in the division at the MACW North Tournament to earn a spot in the MACW Championship Tournament for the second year in a row.
Season records show that 99 percent of Boe's sets during the 1984 campaign were accurate and she also ranked among the top five on the team in digs and blocks. For the second year in a row she earned all-conference honors and was voted the Foresters' Most Valuable Player. Also a standout softball player, Boe was inducted into the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. Her teammate for three years in both sports, Cindy Hahn '86, joined her among the Foresters' all-time greats in 2006.
Since all Lake Forest College sporting events during the fall semester have been postponed, the Athletic Department is utilizing its archives to continue the weekly recognition of high-level performances by Foresters. The department has selected a Forester Athlete of the Week since 1996, so the honorees for the rest of 2020 will have earned the distinction at least 25 years ago.
A note of gratitude goes out to Mike Dau '58, whose tireless efforts as the department's historian has made this fall's Forester Athlete of the Week research possible.
