The Lake Forest College volleyball team defeated visiting
Milwaukee School of Engineering (25-16, 25-21, 25-21) Monday night
(October 5). The Foresters are now 4-14 this season while the
Raiders fell to 1-22.
Forester freshman Megan Trubich (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield
Central), who had a match-high three aces and 16 digs on the night,
served up the first five points of the contest. M.S.O.E. came back
and tied the set 8-8 but the home team scored 12 of the next 16
points to pull away. Junior Mandi Mulliner (Elmhurst, Ill./York)
pounded out six kills in just nine attempts without an error in the
set.
Set two was tied 11 times. The Raiders led 18-17 before six
straight points by the Foresters, including five with Trubich
serving, put Lake Forest within two points of taking the set.
M.S.O.E. trimmed the lead to 23-21 before a service error followed
by an ace by Forester sophomore Theresa Converse (Warrentown,
Va./Notre Dame Academy) closed out the set. Mulliner had two kills
in the set that tied the score and three more that put Lake Forest
ahead.
The home team scored the first two points and led throughout the
third set. The largest margin was six points at 13-7 and the score
was 21-16 before the Raiders rattled off four consecutive points to
pull to within one. After a timeout, the teams traded service
errors before the Foresters scored three in a row to end the match.
Lake Forest freshman Cori Cooper (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake
Central) had six kills in the final set and finished the contest
with 11.
Mulliner recorded a match-high 15 kills, .458 hitting percentage,
and three blocks. She also added 11 digs. Junior setter Deena Blanchard (Sparta, Mich./Sparta) reached double figures in assists
in each set and finished the night with 35, her highest total for a
three-set match this season.
The Foresters' next five matches will be against Midwest Conference
opponents, beginning next Tuesday night (October 13) at 7:00
against visiting Knox College. Live video webcasts of all of Lake
Forest's remaining home and conference matches will be available at
