The Lake Forest College women;s basketball team defeated
Finlandia University 72-65 in the consolation game of Hope
College's Flying Dutch Holiday Classic on Saturday (December 19).
The Foresters raised their record to 6-3 while the Lions fell to
3-9.
Senior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) led
the Foresters with 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three
steals. Junior guard Emily Weber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills
School) was the only other player on the team in double figures
with 13 points. She and senior guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle,
Ill./Lake Park) also had three steals and senior guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) matched Nassin's three assists.
Lake Forest shot 44.6 percent from the field but made just two of
10 three-pointers and 20 of 38 foul shots. Finlandia was held to 39
percent from the floor and 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from beyond the
arc. The Lions made 11 of 17 attempts from the free throw line. The
Foresters held a slight 40-39 edge in rebounds and committed 18
turnovers while forcing 26.
Lake Forest led 15-13 eight-and-a-half minutes into the contest
before outscoring the Lions 28-11 during the remainder of the
half.
Trailing 43-24 at halftime, Finlandia opened the second period with
a 19-3 run to pull to within three (46-43) with 11:40 to play. They
would get no closer, however, as the Foresters scored 17 of the
game's next 22 points. Finlandia came back again but got no closer
than six points in the final minute of the contest.
With 32 points and 18 rebounds in the Foresters' two games
combined, Nassin was named to the all-tournament team.
The Foresters will resume Midwest Conference play in their next
game on Tuesday, January 5, at Grinnell College. Tip-off is
