The Lake Forest College men's swimming team placed second and the women sixth at Carthage College's "Winter Classic" over the weekend. The Foresters made nine new entries into the program's list of the top five in each event, including two by freshman Sam Freedberg.
Freedberg placed third in the 200-IM on Friday with a time of 1:57.22 and he was fifth in Saturday's 400-IM in 4:16.45. Both performances place him fifth in school history in the respective events.
Freshman Emily Bowens now ranks fifth in team annals in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:11.25, good for fifth in Friday's race. Sophomore Emile Siroit was third in the 200-butterfly and he slips into fifth place in program history in that event. Freshman Drake Nickell added his name in the number five spot in the 100-butterfly. He posted a time of 53.10 seconds on Saturday and finished fifth in the meet. Finally, sophomore Kristofer Korth posted the Foresters' only victory at the meet and his time of 16:36.45 in the 1650-freestyle was faster than the winning time at least season's Midwest Conference Championships. It also places him second in team history.
The men's 800-freestyle relay team broke the school record with a time of 7:02.75 while placing second in Friday's first final and the women's 200-freestyle relay started Friday's evening session with a fifth place time of 1:40.44, good for fifth in program history.
Several other Foresters placed near the top in individual events over the weekend. On the women's side, senior Loren Dutca was fourth in the 500-freestyle (5:15.47) and seventh in the 100-freestyle (56.01) on Friday before finishing third in the 1650-freestyle (18:19.65) and 10th in the 200-freestyle (2:01.24) on Saturday. In addition to her performance in the 200-backstroke, Bowens placed 10th in the 50-freestyle (25.64) and sixth in the 100-backstroke (1:00.60) on Saturday. Freshman Lauren Dalecky was fifth in the 100-breaststroke (1:10.29), ninth in the 50-freestyle (25.72) and fourth in the 200-breaststroke (2:35.93).
Korth's spot in the 1650-freestyle was just one of his four top-five finishes at the meet. He was also tied-for-third in the 100-breaststroke (59.86) on Friday and fifth in the 400-IM (4:16.77) and third in the 200-breaststroke (2:08.25) on Saturday. Freedberg added a fourth-place finish in Friday's 200-butterfly (2:00.15) and a seventh-place finish in Saturday's 200-breaststroke (2:16.86). Senior Zachary Wenner was among the leaders in three events, finishing third in the 500-freestyle (4:50.77) and sixth in the 100-freestyle (47.81) on Friday and seventh in the 200-freestyle (1:46.05) on Saturday. Freshman Orion Huey placed third in Friday's 200-backstroke (1:57.80) and seventh in Saturday's 400-IM (4:21.16).
Lake Forest' runner-up finish in the men's team standings is the squad's best performance in 10 years of attending the meet.
It was the Foresters' final competition of the 2013 fall semester.
