Senior John Cappuccitti scored to tie the game with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation as the Lake Forest College men's soccer team tied visiting Carthage College, the 18th-ranked team in the nation, on Wednesday.
The Foresters were threatening to score late in the contest when a loose ball came to Cappuccitti at the top of the box and he blasted it past the Carthage goalie into the right side of the goal. It was the second score of the season for Cappuccitti.
After out-shooting Lake Forest 7-6 in a scoreless first half, the Red Men took the lead on a header 10 minutes into the second. The visitors attempted 10 shots to the Foresters' five in the second half and each team had one attempt in the first 10-minute overtime period and two in the second.
Each of the last three meetings between the two teams have gone to overtime. Carthage prevailed 2-1 in 2013 and the Foresters won by the same score last season.
Lake Forest junior goalkeeper Tero Elias continued his stellar play, making nine saves in the contest. Four of his stops came in the first half, three in the second, and two in double-overtime. He is now 2-1-1 with 35 saves in 38 chances this year.
The Foresters remain at the .500 mark with a 2-2-1 record. Carthage is now 3-1-1.
Lake Forest will play a pair of games this weekend. After traveling to Benedictine University on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game, the team will host former Midwest Conference rival Carroll University Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
