The Lake Forest College men's soccer team hosted and defeated St. Mary's University 2-1 in double-overtime Friday evening in the season opener for both teams. Senior Stephen Egan assisted on both Forester goals, which were scored more than 107 minutes apart.
Egan's corner kick was sent into the goal by sophomore Mahir Mameledzija just two minutes and 15 seconds into the game, giving the home team the early lead.
St. Mary's, however, tied the game at the 17-minute mark.
Lake Forest out-shot the Cardinals 9-5 in the first period and 8-3 in the second but neither team was able to break the tie. There were no shots attempted in the first 10-minute overtime period and the Foresters had a 2-1 edge in that category in the second.
It appeared that the game would go down as a tie but Lake Forest sophomore Nicholas Kliminski was able to chase down a pass upfield from Egan and send the ball past the St. Mary's goalie with just 20.9 seconds remaining on the clock.
Junior goalkeeper Giancarlo Colasanti recorded five saves, including one in the second overtime, to earn the victory in his first game as a Forester.
Lake Forest wil travel to Rockford College for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday. The Foresters' next home game will be next Wednesday against Edgewood College at 5:00 p.m.
