Men's golfer Ricky Schmidt was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday after claiming medalist honors at the St. Norbert Invitational over the weekend.
Schmidt, a freshman, shot a 76 on Saturday and a 75 on Sunday on the par-72 course at Royal St. Patrick's Golf Links in Wrightstown, Wisconsin. He tied with two members of the host school but had the bast second round of the three and was named the event's medalist. Schmidt's opening round included 14 pars and a birdie on the par-5, 574-yard seventh hole. On Sunday he recorded 13 more pars, including 12 in a row, and a birdie on the par-3, 203-yard 15th.
Schmidt's score on Sunday matched his best of the year, set in the season opener on September 11. He is the first Forester to earn medalist honors since the program was reinstated as a varsity sport in 2014.
Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays. Schmidt is the program's first player to earn the honor.
