The Forester men's basketball team was defeated 68-66 at Benedictine University Tuesday night.
Freshman guard Andre Bennett shot 7-for-12 from the field and led Lake Forest with a season-high 17 points. Fellow freshman guard Tommy Condon was next on the team with 13 points while sophomore forward Frank Siegien added 10.
The Foresters out-shot the Eagles from the field but were outscored 30-18 on three-pointers. Thanks to a game-high 18 rebounds by sophomore wing Johnny Roeser, Lake Forest had a 49-37 advantage on the boards but committing 16 turnovers to Benedictine's nine proved costly for the visitors.
Lake Forest trailed by one before rattling off 10 straight points and taking a 32-23 lead late in the opening half. The Eagles scored the next four points before a layup by freshman guard Adam Weingard gave the Foresters a 34-27 edge going into the locker room at halftime.
After losing the lead early in the second half, the Foresters scored nine consecutive points to pull ahead by six (49-43) with 11:15 remaining. The home team tied the score at 51 a minute-and-a-half later and took the lead for good on a three pointer on its next possession. Trailing by eight with five minutes to play, Lake Forest came back and closed to within a point with two minutes left and again on a free throw with 2.6 just seconds on the clock, but were unable to pull out the victory.
The loss dropped the Foresters' record on the season to 0-3 while Benedictine improved to 7-2.
Lake Forest will travel to Ripon College on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
