Fred Broda '68 was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for his performance between January 28 and February 3 during his first two years at the College.
Lake Forest hosted and defeated Carroll College 81-75 on Thursday, January 28, 1965, with Broda scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on the night. The Foresters earned another 6-point victory two days later, knocking off visiting Monmouth College 85-79. Broda recorded season-highs in the contest with 33 points and 17 boards before notching his seventh consecutive double-double (17 points, 15 rebounds) in a 95-88 loss to Hope College the following Tuesday.
The same week a year later was also good to Broda and the Foresters. They traveled to Carroll on Saturday, January 29, 1966, and came away with a 78-70 victory. Broda shot 13-for-19 from the floor, scored 30 points, and added 10 rebounds on the afternoon. The forward followed that up with a 29-point, 10-rebound performance in a 96-92 triumph over Carthage College at home the following Wednesday.
Broda was Lake Forest's top scorer all four years and is still the program's all-time leader with 1,825 points in his career. He is the only Forester to average at least 20 points per game (20.3) over the course of a four-year career and his 1,037 rebounds (11.0 per contest) rank second in school history. His finest year statistically came in 1967-68 when he averaged a program record 24.6 points and added 14.3 rebounds per contest. Broda was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player four times, captained the squad as a senior, and was inducted into the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

Until sports resume at Lake Forest College, the Athletic Department is utilizing its archives to continue the weekly recognition of high-level performances by Foresters. The department has selected a Forester Athlete of the Week since 1996, so these individuals will have earned this recognition by their performance at least 25 years ago.
A note of gratitude goes out to Mike Dau '58, whose tireless efforts as the department's historian has made the Forester Athlete of the Week research possible.
