The Lake Forest College men's and women's swimming and diving teams placed fifth at the highly-competitive Carthage College Classic on Friday and Saturday. Junior Garr Punnett and senior Becky Shaak each won an event and posted a pair of third-place finishes.
Punnett prevailed in the 100-butterfly with a career-best time of 51.41 seconds. He still ranks second in team history in the event, but now by just 15-one-hundredths of a second. He also finished third in the 200-backstroke and his time of 1:54.24 also ranks him second in program history in that event. His other third-place finish came in the 100-backstroke and his prelim time of 54.17 seconds was his fastest of the day.
Shaak won the 400-IM with a time of 4:38.02 She was also third in the 200-IM (2:11.87) on Friday and the 200-breaststroke (2:26.58) on Saturday.
The Foresters' only runner-up finish in an individual event was turned in by junior Zach Wenner in the 200-freestyle, which he finished in 1:45.34. Wenner was also fourth in the 100-freestyle (48:06) and sixth in the 500-freestyle (4:51.98).
Lake Forest sophomore Kelsie Miller placed third in the 200-backstroke with a career-best time of 2:09.76. She still ranks third in program history in the event. Miller was also fourth in the 100-backstroke (1:00.20) and sixth in the 100-butterfly (1:01.76).
Forester freshman Kristopher Korth put his name in the school record books. His fourth-place time of 16:47.23 in the 1650-freestyle ranks him fourth in team history. Korth was also fifth in the 200-breaststroke (2:15.02) and sixth in the 100-breaststroke (1:01.93).
All four of the Lake Forest men's relays placed among the top four at the meet, led by a runner-up finish in the 400-medley relay. Punnett, Korth, sophomore Kevin Barbrick, and Wenner posted a time of 3:35.29 in the event. The Foresters were also third in the 200-medley (1:37.80) and 400-freestyle (3:12.60) relays and the fourth-place time of 1:27.06 recorded by Barbrick, Wenner, Punnett, and senior Diego Ledesma in the 200-freestyle relay was just a third-of-a-second off the school record.
The best relay performances by the Forester women were fourth-place finishes in the 400-medley (4:06.06) and 400-freestyle (3:43.75).
It was the final meet of the fall semester for Lake Forest, which will open up the second semester at the Illinois-Michigan Quadrangular, hosted by Hope College, on January 12.
