The Lake Forest College men's tennis team closed its 2014 season with a fifth-place finish at the Midwest Conference Championships over the weekend. Foresters senior Jerry Wang and sophomore John Snider posted runner-up finishes in Saturday's singles competition.
Snider defeated the #4 player from Carroll University 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and knocked off his counterpart from Cornell College 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. After Snider won a tiebreaker 8-6 to take the first set in the championship match, his opponent from Grinnell prevailed 6-2 in the second set and 7-5 in the third to claim the title.
Wang did not drop a game in his 6-0, 6-0 triumph over St. Norbert College's #6 player in the quarterfinals and followed that up with a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the semifinals against Carroll University. He was then defeated by Grinnell in the championship.
Junior Anthony Mykhaylovskyy was the only other Forester to advance to the semifinals at his spot in the lineup. He blanked his opponent from Illinois College 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to Monmouth. Freshman Dragan Trivanovic won the consolation final 8-2 at #3. Junior Anthony Warren reached the consolation final at #1 singles and freshman Ellis Lora-Arceo accomplished the same feat at #2.
The Foresters' #1 doubles team of Warren and Lora-Arceo triumphed 6-0, 6-3 in their opening round match against the top tandem from Illinois College before falling to Knox in the quarterfinals. Snider and Trivanovic fell in the first round but came back to win the consolation final at #2. Mykhaylovskyy and junior Derek Schaltz dropped their first two matches at #3.
Lake Forest placed in the top half of the conference standings for the eighth time in the last nine years.
Wang is the only player the team will lose to graduation in a couple of weeks.
