The Forester men's soccer team posted a 4-0 victory over visiting Cornell College on Sunday. Lake Forest junior Mahir Mameledzija recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist in the contest.
Lake Forest had a 7-2 edge in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half but the game was still scoreless until the final minute of the period. Forester junior Nicholas Kliminski attempted a shot that was blocked by the defense and Mameledzija kicked in the rebound with 20 seconds to play in the period.
Freshman Dylan Hartman kicked in a rebound off a shot by Mameledzija at the 64:32 mark to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. It was Hartman's third goal of the season. Kliminski also assisted on Mameledzija's second goal of the game at 73:32 and Hartman set up his third at 82:51.
Mameledzija's third goal of the game was the 37th of his career, breaking his brief tie with Forester Athletic Hall of Famer Tony Mulert for third place in program history. It also gave him 88 career points, which surpassed Brett Egner for fifth in team annals. Next on the list is Forester head women's coach T.R. Bell with 91.
It was the third shutout in five days for Lake Forest senior goalkeeper Ethan Guenther, who has not allowed a goal in more than 322 minutes this season. He had five saves in the contest and has stopped all 14 shots on goal he has faced in 2012.
The Foresters are now 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Midwest Conference play. Cornell fell to 0-7-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the league.
Lake Forest will continue MWC play at Lawrence University next Saturday afternoon at 3:30.
