Senior post player Travis Clark scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games this season. Junior guard Jeff Beck also reached double figures with 11 points and senior forward Drew Grennell led all players in the contest with a career-high 14 rebounds, including nine at the offensive end of the court.
The Foresters shot 47.3 percent from the field while limiting the Muskies to 33.8 percent. Lake Forest also had a commanding 47-32 edge in rebounds but committed 21 turnovers, nine more than Lakeland.
Lake Forest led by as many as seven points (11-4) early in the contest but lost the advantage on a basket with six seconds left in the first half.
The lead changed hands seven times early in the second half, the last time on a three-pointer by Forester senior guard Chris Roets at 15:34 that put the home team ahead for good. The basket also started an 18-5 Lake Forest run that gave the team a 12-point advantage with 8:46 to play. Lakeland, however, pulled back to within four points (61-57) with four minutes left but would get no closer. The Foresters scored the next 10 points to put the game out of reach and claim their first victory of the season.
Lake Forest is now 6-4 all-time against Lakeland, which was playing its first game of 2011-12.
The Foresters will travel to the University of Chicago next Tuesday for an 8:00 tip-off.
