The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released its Division III All-Region Teams on Friday and Lake Forest College's Carlie Mertz was a Second Team selection in the Great Lakes Region.
With a .514 batting average at the plate and 6-2 record in the circle, Mertz earned the utility/pitcher spot on the second team. In addition to batting average, she leads the Foresters with a .570 on-base percentage and .829 slugging percentage while ranking second on the squad with 28 runs and tied-for-second with 23 runs batted in and 14 extra base hits (8 doubles, four triples, 2 home runs). The junior also owns a 3.24 earned run average with 31 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched.
Mertz has 11 multi-hit performances this year and registered an 11-game hitting streak from April 18 to May 5 during which she also scored at least once in every contest. Among her five complete games as a pitcher is a shutout of Ripon College on April 17 and she struck out a season-high batters at Lawrence on May 9.
Mertz is the 45th Forester to be named all-region in the last 20 years.
