The Lake Forest College volleyball team was defeated 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-8, 15-10 by visiting Cornell College on Saturday. Freshman outside hitter Grace Larson led the home team with 13 kills and now has a team-high 205 on the season.
Larson missed her fourth straight double-double by just one dig and added three blocks on the afternoon. Senior right side hitter Bailey Everhart was next on the team with a dozen kills and she posted a .300 hitting percentage in the contest.
Senior libero Brianne Honda led Lake Forest with 17 digs and four aces while junior middle blocker Brittany Avonts and freshman defensive specialist/setter Mallory Krzysciak finished with a team-high eight blocks and 17 assists, respectively.
The Foresters led for most of the first set, but by no more than four points. Cornell tied the score at 18 but kills by Everhart and Larson put Lake Forest back on top. The Rams pulled back to within a point four times but Lake Forest held on to take the set.
The home team's largest lead in any set was a six-point advantage (16-10) in set two. Cornell closed to within two four times before a kill by Larson finished it off and gave Lake Forest a two-set edge.
The Foresters led 7-5 in the third set before a 9-1 run by the Rams gave them a comfortable lead. Cornell led by at least five points for the rest of the set.
The Rams won 11 of 12 points early in set four and continued to pull away, forcing a fifth and final set.
Lake Forest never led in the fifth. The margin fluctuated between one and three until the visitors won four of five points to close out the match.
The loss dropped the Foresters overall record to 8-15 and their Midwest Conference mark to 4-3. Cornell is now 10-13 overall and 7-1 in the league.
Lake Forest will travel to Carroll University on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
