Junior Emma Wang's school record singles winning streak finally came to an end Saturday as Lake Forest prevailed 9-0 at Cornell College before dropping a 6-3 decision at Grinnell College.
Wang won her final two singles matches as a freshman in 2017-18 and finished her sophomore season with a perfect record of 24-0. Her 6-3, 6-0 triumph at #3 at Cornell on Saturday was her fifth win of the season and extended the streak to 31. She was defeated 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 by Grinnell's #4 player, however, to end the longest run in team history by 13 matches.
Lake Forest began the day in dominating fashion, blanking each of Cornell's doubles teams 8-0.
Wang was the first to finish in singles and fellow junior Grace Gould followed at #6, taking both sets 6-1. Sophomore Tebatso Duba rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #2 and junior Julie Lord prevailed 6-2, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Freshman Natalia Leite came out on top 6-3, 6-1 at #5 and junior Tyranny Miller closed out the contest with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #4.
The Foresters took the early lead at Grinnell with an 8-3 victory by Lord and senior Leeza Bodnar at #1 doubles while Wang and Gould doubled up their counterparts at #3 8-4.
The Pioneers avoided the sweep with a win at #2 doubles and then clinched the match by earning the points at each of the top five positions in the singles lineup. The visitors' only other victory came at #6, where Leite prevailed 7-5 in the first set and 6-0 in the second.
Lake Forest is now 7-1 overall this season and 4-1 in Midwest Conference play. Cornell fell to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the league while Grinnell remained perfect on the year at 5-0, both overall and in conference play.
