Sophomore midfielder Sangjun Hornewer assisted on the first goal of the game and scored the last as the Forester women's soccer team prevailed 4-2 at Cornell College on Saturday.
Hornewer set up senior midfielder Kayla Wuest just four minutes and 12 seconds into the contest. The only goal of the first half was the second of the season for Wuest.
Lake Forest had a 7-4 advantage in shots in the opening period but led by just one at halftime.
The Rams evened the score less than six minutes into the second half but the visitors regained the lead at the 61:08 mark. From the right side of the field Wuest dribbled the ball into the middle roughly 30 yards from the goal and played it up to freshman midfielder Cassidy Hoyt. Hoytreceived the pass, turned, and used her left foot to blast it past the Cornell goalkeeper for her team-high sixth score of the season.
The home team, however, tied the game again just four minutes later.
The Foresters finally took the lead for good on a penalty kick by senior defender Shari Jacobson at 68:31. It was her second score of the season and her first career game-winner. They added an insurance goal with just 3:05 remaining when Hornewer's corner kick from the right side of the field found its way into the goal. It was her first score of the year.
Lake Forest out-shot the Rams 13-10 and doubled the home team's 10 shots in the contest.
Forester senior goalkeeper Caroline Campbell made three saves in the victory and improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
Lake Forest improved to 3-6-0 overall on the season while Cornell fell to 1-8-0. It was the Midwest Conference opener for both teams.
The Foresters will continue their trip to Iowa on Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. game at Grinnell College.
