Softball player Jenny McTague was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday after throwing a perfect game in a 1-0 victory over visiting Carroll University last Saturday.
McTague, a junior, struck out eight batters and induced a dozen groundouts. The only ball to leave the infield was a line drive to freshman leftfielder Maria Zepeda for the second out of the seventh inning. The ball initially looked as if it might get over Zepeda's head but she was able to get back and make the catch. The final batter of the game grounded out to McTague, who was then mobbed by her teammates. It was the 16th no-hitter in program history but the first to end 1-0. It was also the third perfect game in team annals and the second in the Foresters' last three games against Carroll.
After sweeping Carroll 8-1 and 1-0 on Saturday, Lake Forest defeated Knox College 8-0 (five innings) and 5-1 on Sunday. McTague was the starting pitcher in game two and allowed just two base hits while striking out six in four-and-a-third innings of work.
McTague is now 7-5 with a 3.72 earned run average and 69 strikeouts in 75.1 innings this season.
Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays. McTague also received the award on March 31.
