The Lake Forest College men's basketball team won 91-74 at Monmouth College on Saturday. Freshman guard Josh Irving was one of five Foresters to reach double figures in scoring and finished with 14 points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists in his first career start.
Irving shot 4-for-7 from the field and knocked down three of five attempts from three-point range. The Foresters' leading scorer was senior guard James Stack, who was also 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and had 19 points on the afternoon. The Midwest Conference leader in free throw percentage made eight of nine from the line and is now shooting 92 percent for the season. Freshman forward Jim Schick matched Irving's 14 points while junior forward Brian Madson and freshman guard Andrew Toth added 11 apiece. Madson led the visitors with six rebounds.
Lake Forest shot 53.8 percent from the floor, made a season-high 12 three-pointers in 27 attempts (44.4%), and knocked down 23 of 27 foul shots (85.2%). Monmouth shot 45.2 percent from the field, connected six times from long-range, and converted 12 of 17 free throw opportunities. The Fighting Scots had a slight 34-31 edge in rebounds.
A pair of free throws by Stack midway through the first half gave the Foresters the lead for good and began a 19-6 run that led to a 48-34 edge at halftime.
The margin remained in double figures throughout the second half and grew to as many as 21 in the period.
Both teams are now 5-9 overall and 4-5 in league play this season.
The Foresters will host Carroll University next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
