The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 69-57 by visiting Carthage College Tuesday night. Junior guard Jordan Gipson was one of four Foresters with nine or more points in their first home game of the season.
Gipson attempted just five shots from the field but made three, including one from three-point range, and knocked down both of his free throws for a nine-point performance. He also added four assists and three steals in the contest.
Sophomore forward Brian Madson led the home team with 15 points and he pulled down six rebounds. Senior guard Jeff Beck was next with 11 points and he chipped in with a team-high eight rebounds and six assists. Senior forward Chris Madson matched Gipson's nine points and led Lake Forest with eight rebounds.
The Foresters shot 42 percent from the floor while the Red Men made almost 46 percent of their field goal attempts. Both teams attempted 22 three-pointers with Lake Forest making eight and Carthage six. The Foresters were also just 5-for-11 from the free throw line while the visitors knocked down 11 of 15 foul shots. Lake Forest was out-rebounded 36-31 and committed 19 of the game's 32 turnovers.
There were five ties and six lead changes in the first half. Lake Forest led by as many as seven points (13-6) early in the contest but the Red Men came back with seven straight points to tie the game. Carthage took the lead for good on a basket with 2:24 to play in the period and was ahead 32-29 at halftime.
Lake Forest got no closer the rest of the way. The margin reached double figures for the first time midway through the second half and was never less than seven for the remainder of the contest.
The Foresters fell to 0-2 on the season while Carthage raised its record to 2-1.
Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference play at Knox College Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
