The Lake Forest College handball team is competing at the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships at Arizona State University this weekend. Freshman Sandy Ng, sophomore Isaac Acosta, and seniors Nikolai Nahorniak and Victor Perez have already earned Handball All-America honors by reaching the Open singles semifinals.
Saturday's Men's Open semifinals will feature three Foresters after Nahorniak (21-8, 21-5), Perez (21-16, 21-8), and Acosta (21-18, 20-21, 11-5) won in Friday's quarterfinals. Acosta reaching the final four was especially notable as he was not seeded among the top 16 in the tournament.
Ng prevailed 21-1, 21-6 in the Women's Open quarterfinals while junior Maria Dugas was edged out 21-9, 6-21, 11-4.
The only other Forester to compete in singles on Friday was sophomore Geoff Douglas, who won 21-4, 21-8 in the Division II A quarterfinals.
Nahorniak and Perez also teamed up for a 21-9, 21-9 victory in the quarterfinals of the Men's Open Doubles Division. Acosta and senior Pat Jarvis were also victorious in the quarterfinals, posting a hard-fought 21-20, 6-21, 11-7 triumph.
Dugas and Ng are in the Women's Open Doubles semifinals after winning 21-6, 21-2 in the first round. Seniors Sarah Brusig and Nicole Moser suffered a 21-9, 21-9 defeat.
Sophomores Derrick Contreras and Clark Creasey won 21-9, 21-9 in the Men's B Doubles to advance to the bracket's semifinal round.
Additional matches are scheduled for Saturday and competition will conclude on Sunday.
