Lake Forest Falls to Ripon in Home Opener

The Forester football team was defeated 35-7 by Ripon College on Saturday (September 12). It was Lake Forest's home opener and the first Midwest Conference game of the season for both teams. The Foresters are now 0-2 overall on the year while the Red Hawks evened their record at 1-1.

Each team put together a touchdown drive to start the game. First Ripon traveled 44 yards in seven plays to take a 7-0 lead. Lake Forest then tied the score on a 9-play, 52-yard march that ended on a 29-yard touchdown pass from junior Geoff Sobey (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) to senior Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator). Carter finished the game with four receptions for 51 yards and is now just 11 receptions and two touchdowns away from matching the program's career records in those categories.

The Red Hawks intercepted a pass at the Forester 15-yard line late in the first quarter and reached the end zone two plays later to take a 14-7 lead. A 6-play, 47-yard touchdown drive late in the second period gave the visitors a 21-7 lead at halftime.

Ripon extended its lead with a touchdown in the third quarter and another late in the fourth.

Lake Forest was out-gained 356-173 overall and 291-35 on the ground in the contest. The Red Hawks recorded 18 first downs, seven more than the home team.

Junior Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) led the Foresters with 70 yards rushing on 22 carries. Sophomore Kevin Davis (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) and freshman Josh Poel (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had three receptions apiece for a total of 61 yards. Sobey was 13-for-23 for 120 yards on the afternoon.

The Forester defense was led by senior linebackers Donovan Baldridge (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) and Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively. Junior linebacker Anthony Garetto (Orland Park, Ill./Marist) added 10 stops for the second straight week.

The Foresters will travel to Illinois College next Saturday (September 19) for a 1:00 kickoff. A live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
