Lake Forest Wins Homecoming Game against Lawrence

The Forester football team celebrated Homecoming with a 28-14 victory over Lawrence University on Saturday (October 10). Lake Forest is now 1-5 overall this season and 1-4 in Midwest Conference play. The Vikings fell to 0-5, both overall and in the league.

Forester junior quarterback Geoff Sobey (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) threw three touchdown passes for the second consecutive week and finished the contest with 173 yards. Classmate Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) led the home team with four receptions, including one for a touchdown, and 82 yards.

Lake Forest's defense was led by sophomore lineman Casey Flynn's (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) 10 tackles. He had two of the team's four sacks. Senior linebacker Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) was next on the squad with nine tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage, and added his second interception of the season. Sophomore safety Luke Butts (Warrensburg, Ill./Warrensburg) finished with eight tackles, including five solos.

The Forester defense accounted for the game's first points midway through the opening period when junior linebacker Tanner Compton (Excello, Mo./Macon) recorded his first career interception and returned it 27 yards to the end zone.

Lawrence returned the favor early in the second quarter, tying the score on an 11-yard interception return.

Compton recovered a fumble forced by senior defensive lineman Jaron Eanes (Cleveland, Ohio/Lake Forest Academy) to end the Vikings' next possession. It was one of Eanes' three tackles for loss in the game and he leads the team with 12 tackles for loss this season.

Senior safety Will Christensen (Park City, Utah/Park City) picked off his second pass of the season later in the second quarter and returned it 35 yards to the Lawrence 30-yardline. Five plays later Sobey connected with junior running back Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) on a 9-yard touchdown pass, giving the home team the lead for good.

The Foresters turned another Lawrence turnover into seven points late in the third quarter. The Vikings' returner mishandled a punt and sophomore wide receiver Kevin Davis (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) recovered it at the Lawrence 12. Sobey hit senior Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) on a 12-yard touchdown pass to put Lake Forest ahead 21-7. It was Carter's 34th career touchdown, breaking the program record he shared for a week with Corey Honore '98.

Senior cornerback Hamid Khan (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) recovered a Viking fumble at the Lawrence 33 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter. It was the sixth turnover forced by the Foresters in the game. Sobey connected with Jarvis on a 31-yard touchdown two plays later, extending the lead to 28-7.

A long touchdown pass by Lawrence with 7:48 to play in the game closed out the scoring.

The victory was the first for Forester head coach Jim Catanzaro. "It was great to finally get a win after being close in a number of games earlier in the season," he stated. "The defense set the tone early and our offense took advantage of some short-field opportunities. I hope it will be a stepping stone towards better things in the weeks to come."

The Foresters will look to make it two victories in a row next Saturday (October 17) at Grinnell College. A live video webcast of the game, which will begin at 1:00 p.m., will be available at www.pennatlantic.com.
