The Forester women's basketball team prevailed 71-68 in overtime at Carroll University Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Liz Radtke led Lake Forest with 19 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Radtke shot 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
Freshman guard Danielle Canulli was next on the team with a career-high 18 points. She shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the foul line and added seven rebounds. Junior point guard Sam Schuring and sophomore guard/forward Gina Ambrose each scored nine points and Schuring added six assists.
Lake Forest shot 44.4 percent from the field, made four of eight attempts from three-point range, and knocked down 19 of 29 free throws. Carroll was held to 35.3 percent shooting from the floor and connected on seven of 19 three-pointers and 13 of 17 foul shots. The Foresters won despite being out-rebounded 41-40 and committing 23 turnovers to the Pioneers' 18.
Radtke's only three-pointer of the game started the scoring and the Foresters jumped out to an 18-6 lead. Carroll outscored the visitors 17-8 to close out the first half, which ended with Lake Forest leading 26-23.
A 12-0 Pioneer run in the middle of the second half turned a seven-point Forester lead into a five-point advantage for Carroll. The margin grew to 10 points (53-43) before Lake Forest scored 13 straight points to take a 56-53 lead with 46 seconds on the clock. Carroll made three free throws with 16 seconds left to force overtime.
A three-pointer by Ambrose gave the Foresters the lead for good with 2:11 to play in the extra five-minute period and her traditional three-point play with 1:04 left made it 67-62. Canulli helped close things out with four free throws in the final 48 seconds.
After winning at Lawrence University and Carroll over the weekend, Lake Forest is now 10-9 overall and 9-6 in Midwest Conference play. Carroll fell to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in the league.
The Foresters will play a non-conference game at Milwaukee School of Engineering Thursday night at 7:00 before resuming league play at Monmouth College Saturday afternoon at 3:00.
