Sophomore Jacob Krugman birdied his final hole of the day for an even-par 70 and medalist honors at the Carthage Spring Invitational on Tuesday. He also led Lake Forest to a third-place finish at the 14-team event.
Krugman was a shot under par at the turn, having carded bogeys on three and nine and birdies on four, five, and eight. Bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put him 1-over but he put his approach shot on 18 within four feet of the pin and sunk the putt to close with a birdie and match the second-lowest 18-hole score since the rebirth of the program in 2014.
Junior Elijah Collins was next on the team and tied-for-11th in the 71-player field with a career-best round of 75. He recorded birdies on the par-5 fourth hole, as well as the par-4 10th. Junior Ricky Schmidt tied for 17th with a 77 and senior Davis DeKorte for 33rd with an 81 to round out the team's top four. Each player had a birdie on the back nine, Schmidt at 13 and DeKorte at 16. Sophomore Austin Aksoy, who began his round on 17, birdied his final hole to finish with an 82.
Carthage was the team champion with a score of 289, a dozen strokes better than runner-up Clarke University. Lake Forest's round of 303 is its best of the spring and tied the second-lowest score in program history.
Tuesday's event was played at the 6,530-yard, par-70 course at Kenosha Country Club in Somers, Wisconsin. It was the first of four competitions this week for the Foresters, who will travel to The Bog in Saukville, Wisconsin, for Bryant and Stratton College's Bobcat Invitational on Friday. The tournament is scheduled to begin at noon.
