The Forester women's basketball team was defeated 84-66 by Monmouth College at home on Saturday. Senior forward Gina Ambrose led Lake Forest with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the final game of her collegiate career.
Ambrose and senior guard Sam Schuring were honored before the Senior Day game. Schuring finished the contest with eight points, five rebounds, and a game-high six assists. She also completed her career as the program's all-time leader with 394 assists and her 1,045 points and 181 steals as a Forester rank seventh and fifth in team history, respectively. Ambrose is listed third in team annals with a career free throw percentage of .821 and 10th with 71 three-pointers over the last four years.
Lake Forest sophomore guard Michelle Ricolcol scored a dozen points on Saturday and was the only other player on the team in double figures. she shot 5-for-7 from the field and made both of her attempts from three-point range on the evening.
The home team made just one-third of its field goal attempts but shot 40 percent (8-for-20) on three-pointers. Monmouth shot 48.3 percent overall and made five of 10 tried from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots were also 21-for-29 from the free throw line while Lake Forest made just 14 of 25 foul shots and the visitors had a 47-38 advantage in rebounds.
There were a pair of ties and six lead changes in the game's first seven minutes. Monmouth used a 13-1 run to take the lead for good and the visitors' advantage was eight points at 37-29 at halftime.
The margin grew to as many as 17 points early in the second half but an 18-6 Forester run made it a five-point game (60-55) with 8:43 to play. The Scots, however, scored the game's next eight points and led by at least nine the rest of the way.
Lake Forest finished the 2013-14 season with an overall record of 7-16 and a Midwest Conference mark of 7-11. Monmouth will enter next weekend's four-team MWC Tournament 18-5 overall and 14-4 in the league.
Schuring finished the season as the team leader with 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.6 steals per contest. Sophomore forward K.C. Stralka was the squad's top shot blocker with 24 in 23 games.
Ambrose and Schuring are the only two members of the team whose eligibility has run out.
