Foresters Win Crucial Game at Carroll

Foresters Win Crucial Game at Carroll

The Lake Forest College women's basketball team edged out host Carroll University 80-77 in overtime Tuesday night. Forester sophomore guard Jenna Rice scored half of her career-high-tying 12 points in the extra period.

Rice made a layup just four seconds into overtime, extended the Forester lead to five on her third three-pointer of the contest, and made one of two free throws in the final seconds to account for the final score. She was 4-for-4 from the field in the game and led the visitors with four assists.

Senior forward Liz Radtke was Lake Forest's leading scorer and matched her season-high with 21 points. She shot 5-for-10 from the field and 11-for-12 from the foul line in the contest. Radtke also led the Foresters with six rebounds and five steals and played all but three minutes in the game.

Lake Forest shot 48 percent from the field, made five of 10 attempts from three-point range, and knocked down 25 of 37 free throws. The Pioneers connected on less than 40 percent of their field goal attempts, nine of 21 three-pointers, and 18 of 28 foul shots. Carroll had a 41-36 edge in rebounds and both teams committed 23 turnovers and 24 fouls.

The Foresters scored the game's first five points but gave up the next nine. After Lake Forest pulled back ahead 13-12, Carroll rattled off 15 points in a row and led 35-30 at halftime.

The home team extended its lead to 10 points before committing five turnovers during a 15-0 Forester run that gave the visitors a 51-46 advantage with 11:32 remaining in regulation. Lake Forest pulled ahead again by as many as seven points and was ahead by six before a pair of Pioneer three-pointers in the final 30 seconds sent the game into overtime.

The Foresters made their first four field goal attempts in overtime and led by as many as five points in the period. They connected on just three of six free throws, however, keeping Carroll in the game. Rice's free throw in the final 10 seconds made it a three-point game and a desperation shot by the Pioneers at the buzzer was unsuccessful.

Lake Forest raised its overall record to 7-8 and evened its Midwest Conference mark at 5-5, one game behind Carroll and Grinnell College for fourth place in the league standings. Only the top four teams in the conference qualify for the MWC Tournament.

The Foresters will host Illinois College Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
