Patrick Austin joined the Forester cross country and track coaching staffs prior to the 2022 track season and was named the head coach of both programs a few months later.
Lake Forest runners set 15 school records during the 2022-23 season and 20 Foresters contributed to the team's point total at the 2023 Midwest Conference Indoor and/or Outdoor Championship Meets.
Under Austin's direction, Madeline Morland earned All-MWC honors in the 1500m and 5000m at the 2022 MWC Outdoor Championships. Audrey Paglia was also an All-MWC performer in the 800m at the MWC Indoor Championship Meet while he was an assistant coach earlier in the season.
Twenty members of the track team and five runners who only participated in cross country were named Academic All-MWC in 2023. Including the 14 who earned the same honor in track in 2022, Lake Forest has had 39 such selections in both programs combined since Austin became the head coach.
The Forester women's cross country team placed sixth while a few members of the short-handed men's team competed as individuals at the 2022 MWC Championship Meet.
Austin's experience in coaching track and cross country includes a year as a graduate assistant at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California, and a season as an assistant cross country coach at Yorkville High School in Yorkville, Illinois.
In addition to coaching at the high school and college level, Austin has been a tactical athlete coach with T3i Services in Great Lakes, Illinois, since 2014 and is currently the organization's head run coach as well. With T3i Services he has worked with Naval Special Warfare Candidates on gait analysis, injury prevention, and other aspects of training and run performance.
Austin is a graduate of Elmhurst College (now Elmhurst University), where he was a two-time All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin honoree and qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship Meet in cross country. He is also the track program's former school record-holder in the indoor 3000m and 5000m and still ranks among the team's all-time leaders in several different events. He earned his a degree in exercise science from Elmhurst in 2011.
Austin lives in nearby Buffalo Grove, Illinois.
