Freshman Kerry Mullen won the 50-freestyle and served as the anchor for Lake Forest's victorious 400-freestyle relay team at Lawrence University's Gene Davis Invitational on Saturday. The Forester men won while the women were fourth at the seven-team event.
Mullen's time in the 50 was 26.31 while the margin of victory was just .04 seconds. She also anchored the Foresters' 200-freestyle relay, which place third in 1:47.64 and was the runner-up in the 100-freestyle with a time of 57.66 seconds. Mullen started the final leg of the 400-freestyle relay trailing the leaders from Lawrence by seven-tenths of a second but finished in first place by more than a second in 3:52.09. Sophomore Susan Guo had led off the relay and was followed by freshman Kylie Morgan and sophomore Fallon Longfield.
Mullen's triumphs were two of 15 for the Foresters on the day. Freshman Alec Pittman turned in the first when he won the 500-freestyle in 4:52.30, two-and-a-half seconds ahead of classmate Aaron Helms, the runner-up in the race.
Lake Forest had the top four finishers in the 200-IM, which sophomore Max Rowland won with a time of 2:04.58. He was followed by fellow sophomore Nathan Ulm, freshman Sebastian Wagoner, and sophomore Evan Weller.
Senior Frederick Weichmann swept the men's backstroke events, taking the 100 in 56.72 seconds and the 200 with a time of 2:04.66.
Rowland, Helms, and junior diver Heath Ogawa joined Weichmann as double event winners. Rowland made it 2-for-2 in the individual medleys with a victory and time of 4:25.41 in the 400. Helms prevailed in the 200-butterfly in 2:00.89 and the 1650-freestyle with a time of 16:59.53. Ogawa earned 541.10 points to take the 3-meter competition and his score of 575.80 off the 1-meter board is a new school and Midwest Conference record.
Freshman Graeme Witte added a victory in the 100-freestyle (49.47) and Wagoner in the 200-breaststroke (2:20.99) for the Forester men.
On the women's side included junior Rachel Trevillian won the 200-butterfly in 2:15.91 and classmate Ani Karagianis out-swam the rest of the field in the 1650-freestyle with a time of 19:22.76.
Lake Forest will be back in action on Sunday at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic.
