Lake Forest Women and Men Finish First at Monmouth Invite

The Foresters finished atop both the women's and men's team standings at the Monmouth Invite on Saturday. Freshman Kevin Barbrick was part of three of Lake Forest's 17 victories on the day.

Barbrick began his day by swimming a leg on the Foresters' victorious 400-medley relay team that finished in 3:43, nearly eight seconds ahead of the runner-up squad from Loras College. He also won the 100-breaststroke in 1:02.26 and the 100-butterfly in 54.39 seconds.

Lake Forest started the meet with seven straight first-place finishes, beginning with the women's 400-medley relay. Juniors Meghan Mason and Becky Shaak and freshmen Kelsie Miller and Kim Newell posted a time of 4:20.32, nearly nine seconds ahead of the second-place team from Loras. Barbrick's teammates in the men's race were sophomore Garr Punnett and juniors Alex Marks and Diego Ledesma.

Forester senior Amy Finn and freshman Mark Wilcoxen swept the 1650-freestyle with winning times of 18:58.18 and 17:40.65, respectively. Lake Forest also swept the 200-freestyle with sophomore Loren Dutca finishing in 2:04.58 and sophomore Zachary Wenner setting a new pool record with a time of 1:47.61.

Miller extended the streak with a victory and time of 1:03.64 in the 100-backstroke.

Punnett's winning time of 1:59.34 in the 200-butterfly was just .05 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and Wenner broke his second pool record of the day with a time of 48.66 seconds in the 100-freestyle.

Lake Forest swept back-to-back events for the second time on the day when sophomore Sabrina Letwin (2:21.72) and Punnett (2:01.16) won the 200-backstroke prior to Shaak (2:31.86) and Marks (2:21.37) prevailing in the 200-breaststroke.

The streak reached five when Dutca was the first to touch the wall in the women's 500-freestyle with a time of 5:28.19.

Shaak, Dutca, sophomore Jill Pastick, and Finn registered the Foresters' final victory of the day and finished the 800-freestyle relay in 8:29.78, more than 22 seconds ahead of Monmouth's runner-up team.

Seven schools competed in the meet. Lake Forest won on the women's side with 189.6 points, 54 more than Loras. Monmouth was third, Knox College fourth, Millikin University fifth, Robert Morris University sixth, and Illinois College seventh. The Forester men scored 215 points, distancing themselves from Loras by 65. Monmouth and Knox were third and fourth on the men's side as well and, in order, Illinois College, Millikin, and Eureka College rounded out the team standings.

Lake Forest will compete at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic next Saturdya and Sunday. The competition will begin at 10:00 both days.
