The Lake Forest College softball team was swept by visiting University of Chicago on Thursday, falling 5-0 in the opener and 4-2 in the second game.
Forester freshman pitcher Tori Liewergen struck out seven batters in as many innings in the opener for her first career complete game. She surrendered three runs in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the sixth.
Lake Forest managed just three hits in the game, singles by sophomore shortstop Sam Ritsema and freshman first baseman Kriti Gandy and a double by sophomore tight fielder Kayla Borgra.
Chicago wasted little time taking the lead in game two, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. The visitors tacked on one more in the third and another in the fourth.
The Foresters finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore left fielder Whitney Leiderman led off with an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. Ritsema then reached on a two-base error, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout by Gandy, who also recorded the home team's only other base hit in the contest.
Just two of the four runs allowed by Forester freshman pitcher Jessi Werner were earned.
Lake Forest fell to 5-9 this season while the Maroons raised their record to 9-5.
The Foresters will begin Midwest Conference play with a doubleheader at Cornell College Saturday afternoon at 1:00. Lake Forest will also play at Knox College at the same time on Sunday.
