Six Foresters Finish Season at IHA Doubles Tournament

Six Foresters Finish Season at IHA Doubles Tournament

Junior Leo Canales and senior Anthony Collado were the Open Doubles runners-up at the Illinois Handball Association State Doubles Tournament over the weekend.

Canales and Collado, who reached the semifinals at last week's United States Handball Association National Collegiate Championships, were seeded third out of eight teams in the Open division this weekend. They posted a 21-9, 21-8 victory in the quarterfinals before coming up against back-to-back Forester alumni brother tandems. They eliminated Dane and Adam Szatkowski, who played for Lake Forest in the late 1990s, 21-14, 21-18 in the semifinal round. Their opponents in the final were Mike and David Munson, who graduated from the College in 2001 and 2004, respectively, and the current Foresters were edged out 21-19, 21-13.

Lake Forest sophomore Ricardo Palma and junior Max Roberts were defeated in the quarterfinal round but rebounded with a hardfought 16-21, 21-14, 11-3 victory in the semifinals and a 21-11, 21-14 triumph in the final of the A Division.

A round robin format was used in the four-team women's Open bracket and Forester junior Kyra Vidas and senior Sophia Goss were defeated in each of their three matches. Another pair of Lake Forest alumni, 2008 graduate Carly Stickles and 2016 graduate Christi Valicenti, went 3-0 to claim the title.

It was the final competition on the Foresters' 2016-17 schedule. Collado and Goss are the only two seniors on the team's roster.
