Forester Men Finish Second, Women Fourth at Nationals

The 2017 United States Handball Association National Collegiate Championships concluded on Sunday with the Lake Forest College men finishing as the runners-up, the women in fourth place, and the Foresters third in the combined team standings.

Four Lake Forest players competed in the finals of their respective singles bracket on Sunday, including junior Leo Canales, who reached the championship match in the Men's Open division. Canales fell 21-10, 21-11 but earned All-Tournament and All-America honors.

Fellow junior Ricardo Palma calimed the Men's A1 Singles title with a 21-6, 21-16 victory on Sunday. He won five of six matches over the course of the five-day event.

On the women's side Kyra Vidas, another junior, claimed 10th place by reaching the final of the Open 9-16 bracket, where she was defeated 21-4, 20-21, 11-3. Three of her five matches at the event were decided in a tiebreaker.

Freshman Marketa Riley joined Palma as division champions by prevailing in the final of the Women's C1 Singles bracket on Sunday.

The University of Limerick won the men's team championship while Missouri State University took the women's team title. Missouri State also snapped Lake Forest's streak of eight consecutive combined championships.
