The Lake Forest College football team hosted and defeated Knox College 35-6 on Saturday for its second straight victory. Sophomore quarterback Pete Scaffidi and junior wide receiver Kevin Davis tied team records with four touchdown passes and three receiving scores, respectively.
Davis scored the game's first points on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Scaffidi with 81 seconds to play in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful.
The home team extended its lead with 11:07 remaining in the second quarter on a 49-yard field goal by sophomore Dominick Campagna. It was the second-longest field goal in team history.
A 31-yard field goal by Forester senior Tim Gruzwalski then made the score 12-0 with 5:46 to play in the half.
Davis completed his hat trick of touchdowns with a 42-yarder with 2:56 left on the clock and a 40-yarder with 1:16 remaining, giving Lake Forest a 26-0 advantage at halftime.
Scaffidi added his fourth touchdown pass of the game, a 34-yarder to sophomore Austin Sobey, just two minutes and 16 seconds into the third quarter. Scaffidi completed just seven passes on the day but they covered 152 yards. He also ran the ball a dozen times for 102 yards.
Knox finally got on the scoreboard on a 1-yard touchdown run with 12:19 to play in the contest. The two-point conversion failed.
Gruzwalski closed out the scoring with a 33-yard field goal with 3:11 on the clock. His eight points on the day gave him 103 for his career, making him just the third kicker in team history to surpass the 100-point mark.
In addition to Scaffidi's 102 yards rushing, senior Brock Stenberg added 68 on 19 carries. The Foresters finished with a season-high 212 yards, the team's highest single-game total in more than four seasons.
Lake Forest freshman cornerback Ed Dobernig intercepted a pair of passes for the second wee in a row and now has five on the season. A third Prairie Fire turnover occurred when junior defensive lineman Casey Flynn forced a fumble that was recovered and returned 19 yards by sophomore linebacker Jake Rotkvich.
Junior safety Luke Butts led all players in the game with 13 tackles. Flynn was next on the team with eight stops, including a sack and a total of 2.5 tackles for loss.
In addition to the three field goals, the Forester special teams were also successful on punts where senior Anthony Garetto averaged 44.3 yards on three boots.
Lake Forest will take its two-game winning streak to St. Norbert College for next Saturday's season finale. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. and a live video webcast will be available at www.pennatlantic.com.
