Lake Forest falls at Illinois College

Lake Forest falls at Illinois College

The Forester football team had their highest yardage total of the season but fell 27-7 at Illinois College on Saturday. Lake Forest is now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Midwest Conference this season.

Lake Forest amassed 313 yards of offense, including 247 passing by junior quarterback Geoff Sobey. He connected with junior wide receiver Kevin Davis on a 20-yard touchdown pass with to tie the game at seven with 3:58 to play in the first half. It was the third touchdown reception of the year for Davis.

The Blueboys, however, regained the lead on a 28-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later and led 13-7 at halftime.

The home team added a pair of scores in the third quarter and held the Foresters scoreless the rest of the way.

Lake Forest committed four turnovers in the game, including a pair of fumbles deep in Illinois College territory.

Davis finished the contest with 53 yards on five receptions. Fellow junior wideout Josh Kabala set career-highs with seven catches and 93 yards and sophomore Austin Sobey's six receptions were a career-high and covered 56 yards.

Senior linebacker Anthony Garetto led the visitors with 14 tackles. Junior safety Luke Butts was next with 12 and senior linebacker recorded his second career interception and 11 stops, including two behind the line of scrimmage.

"We had a tough game today," noted head coach Jim Catanzaro. "Every time we started to push forward, we shot ourselves in the foot. A fumble here, an interception here, a penalty there. We just couldn't put together a clean game. On a positive note, our defense played with a lot of grit after finding themselves in some difficult field positions. They were on the field for 100 plays on Saturday. On offense, our offensive line only gave up 1 sack in 50 pass attempts.

"I think that we as coaches need to focus on getting our run game going better. We have a great tailback in brock Stenberg and we need to make sure that we get him more touches. On defense, we need to get more pressure on he quarterback. To not record a sack today with the number of blitzes that we dialed up, means we aren't finishing the plays up front.

"I am looking forward to getting a good week of practice in before we return to Farwell Field next week against Grinnell." Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
