Senior libero Briahna Havis tallied 46 digs on the day but the Lake Forest College volleyball team was defeated in three sets by Alma College and in four by Lakeland College at the Forester Invitational on Saturday.
Havis had a match-high 13 digs in the loss to Alma while junior right side hitter Natalie Olson led the Foresters with seven kills and four blocks. Junior setter Lexi Kleva had 21 assists and sophomore outside hitter Grace Larson served up three aces.
Lake Forest led 5-1 early in the opening set but the Scots quickly evened the score at six. There were 13 ties in the set, including at every point from 13 through 20. After Alma rattled off four in a row, the Foresters fought off a set point before dropping it 25-21.
The home team trailed for most of the second set but kept the score close. Down by just two at 19-17, the Foresters dropped five of the next six points to give Alma a set point opportunity. Lake Forest won four points in a row to make the score 24-22 before a Scot kill closed out the set.
Alma jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in set three and the Foresters got no closer than four points the rest of the way. The visitors won six of the final nine points to take the set 25-18 and the match three-sets-to-none.
Lake Forest began its match against Lakeland with a come-from-behind victory in the opening set. Trailing 17-11, the home team rattled off seven straight points to take the lead. The Foresters were down 22-20 later on and won four in a row to set up set point. The Muskies then took the next three and had a set point of their own at 25-24. Lake Forest pulled back ahead 26-25 but Lakeland tied the score again at 26. Kills by senior outside hitter Maxie Mottlowitz and Larson finally closed it out for the Foresters.
Lakeland won the first four points and had two more runs of that length in the second while allowing the Foresters to win back-to-back points just twice in the set. The visitors took at 25-12.
Down 3-1, the Muskies won nine of the next 11 points and continued to pull away in the third set, which they eventually finished off 25-15.
The Foresters trailed 5-4 in the fourth set before dropping the next nine points. The home team battled back to within five points at 21-16 and 22-17 before Lakeland took the final three points and the match.
Havis led all player in digs again with 23 and Kleva tallied 29 assists. Larson posted her second double-double of the weekend with 11 points and 10 digs and was named to the all-tournament team.
Alma went 4-0 on the weekend, Lakeland 3-1, the University of Dubuque 2-2, Lake Forest 1-3, and Marian University 0-4.
The Foresters will play at home again Tuesday night against Trinity International University. The match will begin at 7:00.
