The Lake Forest College men's hockey team defeated visiting Finlandia University 5-1 Saturday afternoon to raise both its overall and Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association records to 2-0-0. Sophomore Zak Borowski scored his second official game-winning goal in as many days.
After a scoreless opening period, Forester junior Ben Finney netted the game's first goal at the 10:30 mark of the second. The power play score was his first goal of the year.
Finlandia tied the game less than six minutes later on what turned out to be the Lions' only goal of the contest.
Borowski then put the Foresters back on top with 32 second remaining in the period. Freshman Kevin Spotts assisted on Borowski's second goal and second game-winner of the young season.
Lake Forest scored its first shorthanded goal of the year at the 7:05 mark of the third period. Freshman Chris Gard set up senior Jordan Cutler for the score, Cutler's second of the season. The home team added unassisted empty net goals by sophomores Phil Bushbacher and Tom Bark at 18:28 and 19:23, respectively. It was Bushbacher's first goal of the year and Bark's second.
Forester sophomore Brendan Sullivan stopped 36 of 37 Finlandia shots on goal in his first appearance of 2010-11.
Lake Forest out-shot the visitors 45-37 in the contest.
Finlandia fell to 0-4-0 overall and in MCHA games.
The Foresters will continue league play with a home-and-home series with Lawrence University next weekend. The teams will play in Appleton, Wisconsin, at 7:00 Friday night and in Lake Forest Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
